Registration is now open! This course officially begins on May 13, 2013. Registering will grant you access to the course space, but actual course content will not be available until May 13th.
The Foundations of Science course at Michigan State University is a massive open online course (MOOC). This means that it is completely online with no location requirements; It is free for those who are not seeking credit or certification, and it is open to the general public.
The course will start in May and run through June. Sign up to be notified for when you can register for the course. For more information, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hope to “see” you online in May!
By taking this course you will be able to:
- distinguish scientific from non-scientific and pseudoscientific ways of thinking about the world. (You will be able to explain the difference between astrology and astronomy to your psychic).
- better engage with science material in the future. (It’s a slippery slope…once you start talking quarks, there is no going back).
- think more critically and to make informed decisions (or why you probably should not buy anything in an infomercial).
- understand science as a reliable method for comprehending the natural world (which is more of a credible threat…global climate change or the end of the Mayan calendar?)
Have you ever wondered if aliens are visiting the earth? Or if ESP or Astrology really work? Maybe you have seen pictures and wonder if the Loch Ness monster or Bigfoot could be real?
Or maybe you have asked yourself if you should worry about artificial sweeteners or have debated whether or not to have your kids vaccinated.
Even though they are different kinds of questions, all of them can be addressed using critical thinking and informed by the scientific method. The Foundations of Science course is designed to give you the tools to evaluate those claims and to give the average non-scientist a foundation for understanding the world around them.
